Neglect Still Haunting Juliana: Snr Home a MUST (2 of 2),Nonprofits & Activism,+Neglect of elderly increases jiggers,+jiggers removed from elder,+Need for Senior Home for Jigger Victims,+removing jiggers from elderly,Juliana (94) was first helped 4 months ago by RUS when she was in very bad shape- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oNTu2u4CYnU. She had had no help for such a long time, and the outstanding feature was the longest nails on her withered hand which was forever hidden in her dress. As she became jigger free, there was song and dance in her home. She lives far away in the village in Bunyore. As a young organization, we do everything we can to help victims with aftercare. We make checks to ensure they are indeed free and working on helping others with similar challenges in their area. But at her age, Juliana cannot do much. When we checked with her, we found out nobody was helping her again. Scales were piled up with jiggers coming again in full swing, and her hands and feet were not cared for, with the long nails being the sure sign of the neglect. She had not been showering and someone around her should have helped this 94 year old. Truth is that it is going to be very challenging helping her there. We wish there was a place to take her. Our office is far from that place, and sometimes those we commission to help don't do the right thing. Juliana's case once again justifies the need for a Senior Home. Alongside the Jigger Clinic we also want to set up a Senior home where the Julianas of this world will stay and be taken good care of. Our budget for the same is $50,000. Our goal is to help alleviate this jigger infestation suffered by an estimated 1.5 - 2.4 million of the 40 million Kenyans are Jigger Victims. This is a serious situation affecting over 5% of the population. MEDICAL CONDITION: The condition depicted is known as "Tungiasis". It is an infestation of the skin by a burrowing flea called Tunga penetrans (aka: Chigoe Flea). A victim is commonly referred to as having "Jiggers." These fleas tend to infest those who have inadequate living conditions and sanitation. METHODOLOGY: Rise Up Society uses the method of physical extraction under the direction of highly qualified, local physicians with hands-on knowledge in this field. We have refined our method over a 3-year period in which approximately 150,000 victims of Jigger infestation have been helped. We have incorporated new and improved equipment, medicines and practices over the course of time as information became available and funding allowed. While physical extraction is not new, it is efficient and our preferred method until research reveals better treatments. Treatment options for Jiggers vary, and our method may not reflect the practices of other groups in other parts of Kenya or in the surrounding countries that are also inflicted with the jigger menace.
